what to believe?

Check out Simon Maplebacks blog, hes got a couple of good vids on Oprah. I've had problems with her for ages so its good to see these videos... Ive only watched 2 of them but they reveal some interesting things...

--------

Someone asked me about how I can follow so many different types of people with different beliefs and practices and asked how I work out what to take and what to drop.

I barrack for Port Adelaide. I like most of our players, I think they are good. But some of them really need something a bit extra, they need to do things differently. When I look at other clubs I see players I think would work really well at my club. I would love to have Buddy Love in our forward line, Garry Abblet in the middle, and Scarlett down back. I don't want them to bring their own club, just themselves. I want a Port Power Buddy Love, a Port Power Abblett... That would do nicely...

William Booth did similar sorts of things. He took things that worked from one place, disregarded what wasn't that great and blended a whole bunch of things together. (One example Army with Church...)

So, for myslef, I take Way of the Masters 'Good Test' and some of their teaching, but I reject some of their Calvinist roots of election and pre-destination, I like some Extreme Prophetic stuff like giving people words from God, but some of their theology can bother me too. I love Charles Finney, Wesley, Booths, Bonnke, etc but it doesn't mean that everything they say I will agree with. But I am more than happy to take the bits do agree with!

I like to test things against Scripture, reason, history, tradition and experience. The main thing though is Scripture. If people disagree with me from Scripture I am so much more willing to debate and listen to them. Scripture is the authorative text that I will work with...

So, heres to having a Port Power dream team...

An interesting but group of bed fellows. False teachers unfortunately abound these days and Irenaeus said "error, indeed, is never set forth in its naked deformity, lest, being thus exposed, it should at once be detected. But it is craftily decked out in an attractive dress, so as, by its outward form, to make it appear to the inexperienced more true than truth itself." One wonders when you might want to return to mainstream Christianity rather than the extremes of the Word-Faith proponents for your source of theology. WJE

good idea wje. Im going to come back to mediocre, apathetic, boring, Christianity. The type of Christianity that sees people do nothing. The type of Christianity that is not seeing revival, the type of Christianity that is bringing decline in the church!

I must be a heretic if I believe that God still does signs and wonders! I must be a heretic if I believe God can make us holy!

Come on WJE, where is my false theology? Show me and lets debate it. Email me, reelbigjimmy@hotmail.com and we'll organise a time to debate this stuff together. I look forward to the challenge!

Interesting responce. Why the diatribe against fellow believers who you seem to think are mediocre and boring? I tend to find the gospel and Christianity exciting and challenging in today's world. Did I say you were a heretic? I don't think so, may be your reaction says something else. The issue is the some of the bed fellows and the way they muddly the gospel and bury it with a false impartation that was never mandated or taught in Scripture. Dare I say I have been around a while and have seen and heard these guys and seen the damage they do. Many of them are not pargons of theological or ethical virtue. The focus on s,w,m is reductionist - what happens if there are no such manifestations? Revival, another interesting word. Revival is not a program we can put on a calandar but we can ask scripture the questions that will open us up to a reviving encounter with the gospel. We can ask Scripture what a gospel-centred church looks like and how it functions. The Holy Spirit shapes God's people for mission through the continuous encounter with the Scriptur. Continuing conversion happens as we indwell Scripture. Go back to the questions I posted last week and work through them. WJE

Hey James, me thinks you protest too much. Some of your bed fellows do not provide an authentic representation of the scriptural gospel nor of the classic Christian faith. When you get into bed with dogs you get fleas. GH

Mainstream Christianity is by no means "mediocre, apathetic and boring". It can be, but that reflects on the individual rather than the church as a whole. Mainstream Christianity is based on sound doctrine and interpretation of scripture in proper context.

Hey guys, officers and the like. I'm just curious on whether you would like to enlighten the readers on specific aspects of the theology of people that James have mentioned, that you disagree with. At the moment all I'm reading is that generally these people have got it wrong. I believe that to be a lie and would prefer some specific discussion on what is making you somewhat displeased with James' words in his original blog.
